Saawariya: Musical romance based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story White Nights
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for giving importance to opulence and grandeur in his films and he continues his signature style in Saawariya which launches two star kids Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor.
The film also stars Rani Mukerjee and Salman Khan. Apparently, Bhansali wanted to keep their guest appearances under wraps but later disclosed it.
Releasing on Friday, the film is a musical romance apparently based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story White Nights.
Bhansali has woven the story around two lonesome youngsters who accidentally meet each other.
Raj (Ranbir Kapoor), a dreamer, spends most of his time in his apartment, creating riddles and finding answers to them and writing poetry. He also loves arguing with his landlady Miss Disa (Zohra Sehgal), with whom he shares a love-hate relationship.
But one night this lonely guy stumbles upon the shy and mysterious Sakina (Sonam Kapoor), a girl with a secret past.
Their chance encounter under a bridge progresses to friendship and an impromptu romance in a remote town near Simla.
And they spend four nights together. With the passing of each night, Raj falls more and more in love with Sakina and tries to win her heart, but Sakina merely sees him as a friend and begins to trust him enough to share her secret.
But when Sakina reveals why she cannot reciprocate his love, Raj is unable to accept her past and is driven into a whirlwind of madness and romance.
Will the same bridge where the lovers met become the same bridge that separates them?
Music plays an important role in Bhansali’s film and for Saawariya he teamed up with fresh talent Monty Sharma, nephew of well-known music composer Pyarelal.
Sharma has done an impressive job in composing love songs, mujras and qawwallis.
This is Hollywood-based production house Sony Pictures’ first Hindi film and is clashing with Shah Rukh Khan’s home production Om Shanti Om.
Bhansali’s last release Black earned critical acclaim but wasn’t able to set the cash registers ringing.
